Day 4: The Quilted Heart Omnibus by Mona Hodgson

Quilted Heart Series Omni

The Quilted Heart Omnibus

Like a beautiful patchwork quilt, the three novellas in The Quilted Heart tell stories of lives stitched together with love and God’s unending grace.  Once a week, Elsa Brantenberg hosts the Saint Charles Quilting Circle at her farmhouse on the outskirts of the riverside town of St. Charles, Missouri. The ladies who gather there have all experienced heartache related to the intense hardships of the Civil War, and together, they are facing their painful circumstances with friendship and prayer. Can the tattered pieces of their hearts be stitched together by God’s grace?

Dandelions on the Wind
When Maren Jensen took a job on Elsa Brantenberg’s St. Charles, Missouri farm, she never expected to call the place her home. As she grows to love Mrs. Brantenberg and her granddaughter, Gabi, Maren is transformed from a lonely mail-order bride-without-a-groom to a beloved member of the Brantenberg household. But when Gabi’s father, Rutherford “Wooly” Wainwright, returns to the farm unexpectedly, everything changes for Maren, and she feels compelled to find another job. Are her choices in obedience to God, or is she running from His plan?

Bending Toward the Sun
Dedicated to her education and to helping her father in his general store, Emilie Heinrich is convinced she doesn’t have time for love. But when a childhood friend returns to St. Charles, Missouri, after serving in the Civil War, his smile and charm captures Emilie’s eye and her heart. Will she be forced to choose between honoring her father and a future with a husband and family of her own?

Ripples Along the Shore
Change is brewing in St. Charles. A group of brave souls are preparing to head west on the Boone’s Lick Wagon Train, led by the mysterious and handsome Garrett Cowlishaw, who served as a Confederate soldier in the war that killed Caroline’s husband. Despite her dislike for him, Caroline is tempted to join the wagon train and start fresh somewhere new, but when Mr. Cowlishaw forbids hera single woman to travel with them, will one man’s prejudice destroy Caroline’s hope for a new future? Or will the ripples of God’s love bring the answer she needs?

~My Interview with Mona~

A bit of an author interview :

Something On why you choose this Era and time period ?

Fifteen years ago, I spent a couple of hours in St. Charles, an enchanting city dating back to the 17-and-1800s. In March 2012 I was finally able to return, and the city, its history, and its peoplefrom times gone by and present daysank deeper into my heart. Imagine my delight when I discovered St. Charles was where Lewis and Clark provisioned for their corps of discovery expedition in 1804. And at the time of my novellas, the riverside city was the stepping off point for the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, funneling a broad array of people on their journey west.

Quilting , Family ect for you ?

It was the imagery and metaphor that led me to first speak at women’s retreats about The Quilted Heart and then write these stories. I’m not a quilter, but I had two grandmothers who were and my Sis Linda is a quilter. I have the first quilt Linda made to commemorate the birth of my first daughter, Amy.

What old fashioned things do you own, save , collect ?

Read paperbacks. 🙂 My hubby is a yard saler. I have a settee, a small caned rocker, a cask, and an Edison phonograph he restored as part of the decor in my office.

and any other fun things you want to add..smile

My Thoughts:

Being a lover of historical fiction, I so love this series that Mona has written.  I have always considered myself a woman born out of my time.  I grew up watching shows like Little House on the Prairie, so I automatically feel in love with this series !  Life may be full of hardships, but it is blessed by friendship, love and wholesomeness , that is rare today.  I am so looking forward to reading Mona’s book Prarie Song, as this series was the prequel to it.  I have to say that I wish personally that this story could go on and on… but I suppose that all good things must come to an end but don’t you just hate it when a story ends ?   Will there be more ?  I hope you all will read this series and then go on to read Mona’s book Prairie Song, Book 1 in  Hearts Seeking Home !

  2. Hi Mona:
I have a quilt on my bed that was a wedding present from on of my husband’s relatives. He was a farmer so I collected a bunch of wheat fabric and made a bear paw quilt and I have the blocks done and just need to get it finished. I am the quilter of the family, if you can call me that as I only have done one complete quilt and several smaller items.
You book Quilted Heart made me want to get back to my quilting again.

  6. I can’t tell you how many quilts I have made. I started in 1983 with a quilt that I made from old shirts and dresses my kids wore as children. The quilting stitches were so big I was embarrassed to show it, so I signed up for a class to learn how to make small stitches. I’m a quilt-a-holic now. My husband and I formed a group of retired people who went in campers to build or work on churches in the winter months. While the men worked on the buildings, the women worked on quilts. We shared so many patterns and learned from each other. Once quilting gets into your blood, you don’t throw away fabric pieces, you just figure out a way to use them!

  7. I took on a really silly project for the first(and so far only) quilt I’ve made. I chose a tile variation of Grandmother’s Garden, which is a handsewn pattern! I sewed so much and so long at first I almost gave myself carpal tunnel syndrome!!! Then I put it aside because I was overwhelmed. When we decided to move out of state I decided there was a particular lady I wanted to machine quilt it before we left so I got it finished. I still need to find a way to use or display it, it’s sitting in my closet. It’s an off-white background, so I’m afraid it will get dirty easily. Silly, huh?

    • I have a white background double wedding ring one here that we use on a bed.It gets washed often. I hang my grandmothers on my wall . Others I just lay over a chair or the couch or they are on beds. Quilts need to be well loved !

  9. I have tried to enter this but when I went to Linda’s FB page I couldn’t find a place to like it. I did do the follow tho. So now is past the 16th. Don’t know if you can back and do the others. I made a Queen size quilt for my son’s wedding but didn’t quilt it.Was a tied quilt. And made a baby quilt for my first grandbaby. Every other square I drew an animal picture on it and embroidered it, with the other colored material. Also a tied quilt. I watched my mother and grandmother quilt on the quilting frame at my gramma’s when growing up. Now one of my daughters and her daughter quilt with their church ladies and love it.
