The Lifegiving Table by Sally Clarkson

Make your table a place where your family and friends long to be—where they will find rest, renewal, and a welcome full of love.

Beloved author Sally Clarkson (The Lifegiving Home, Own Your Life, Desperate) believes that meals lovingly served at home—and the time spent gathered together around the table—are a much-needed way to connect more deeply with our families and open our kids’ hearts. Food and faith, mingled in everyday life, become the combination for passing on God’s love to each person who breaks bread with us.

In The Lifegiving Table, Sally shares her own family stories, favorite recipes, and practical ideas to help you get closer to the people you love . . . and grow in faith together.

From working on college campuses, to sharing the Gospel behind the Iron Curtain as a missionary,  traveling around the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia to speak on discipleship, Sally Clarkson has tenaciously sought after God’s kingdom, and has used her ministry to encourage others to do the same.

From her best-selling books such as Own Your LifeThe Lifegiving Home, and her latest, Different, written with her son Nathan, Sally has shared from her heart and home about the value of motherhood and the potential for home to cultivate life, love, and faith.

In 1995, She and her husband Clay founded Whole Heart Ministries, which has encouraged thousands of families around the world in discipling their children.

A Recipe

The Clarkson Kids’ Favorite Potpie Chicken Soup

2 cups diced red or russet potatoes
3 cups (12-ounce bag) frozen peas and carrots (If you can’t find this frozen mix, you can substitute 11⁄2 cups each frozen peas and fresh carrots. Or you can use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, but check the ingredients—my family won’t eat the kind with lima beans!)

4 cups water (You can add more later if needed.)
2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
1–2 teaspoons minced garlic or garlic paste
1 medium to large onion, chopped (We love lots of onion in almost everything.)
1 tablespoon dried thyme, parsley, and rosemary combined or to taste. (I like a lot, especially thyme. If you want to use fresh herbs, triple this amount.)
2–4 cups diced cooked chicken breast
2 tablespoons butter
11⁄2 teaspoons condensed chicken bouillon or base (This is a kind of concentrated paste that comes in jars or plastic containers. I buy mine at health food markets or Sam’s Club, but you can also find it in many grocery stores. If you use the dry powder, you’ll need to adjust the amount to taste. Try to avoid the kind with MSG.)

1⁄3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1⁄2 cup wine, optional (For this soup I usually use a white wine such as Riesling.)
1 teaspoon or more salt (I use sea salt of different varieties.) 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
Sour cream and chives or fresh herbs to garnish, optional

Boil the potatoes and frozen veggies in the water until cooked through, about 20–30 minutes. (I use a pressure cooker for
4–5 minutes and veggies and potatoes are done.) While veggies are cooking, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter in another pan; sauté garlic, onion, and herbs until onion is translucent. Add onion mixture and chicken to pot with the veggies and let soup simmer on low while you make the sauce.

For the sauce, melt 2 tablespoons butter in another pan. Stir
in chicken bouillon. Whisk in flour and stir mixture constantly over medium heat until all the lumps have disappeared. Add milk and cook until mixture is thickened, then add the wine (if using). Slowly add milk mixture to soup, stirring as it thickens. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. If desired, add a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of chives or herbs. We like to serve this soup with croutons sprinkled on top and with toast and applesauce on the side.

This is a really simple recipe that can be adjusted many ways. For instance, you could use brown rice or noodles instead of potatoes, fresh veggies or a different mix of frozen ones, or even omit the milk mixture and just put the bouillon directly into the soup. I use whatever I have on hand and whatever sounds good at the time.

My Review

Life can be a real hassle at times !  At times it feels as if it is sucking the joy right out of us…

The Lifegiving Table is a fresh look at how to give to your family and friends !

I really loved Sally’s Insight on how to create a loving and caring atmosphere in the home by centering it around the table. Sharing great foods and sharing stories from our lives. I feel this creates a bond between everyone and the mother (cook) and allows for a relaxing time to be filled with joy and in turn allows us to overflow into the lives of all around us.  I enjoyed the recipes and posted above one that is her children’s favorite!

It is a favorite of our’s as well and served with biscuits !

If you feel like you have lost touch with your family or do not have any time together, try getting everyone back to the table (without phones and devices) !  I remember as a girl growing up that being at my grandmother’s table was a wonderful thing ! Each Holiday we would eat those foods we had all come to love and enjoy !

I hope you will pick up a copy of The Lifegiving Table Today !

The Redcoats Are Coming ! by Marianne Hering & Nancy I. Sanders

The Redcoats Are Coming !

The first of a three-book story arc about the American Revolution, The Redcoats Are Coming follows Patrick and Beth as they assist the revolutionaries by waking up the sleeping citizens of 1775 Concord before the Redcoats come. In this adventure, the cousins meet Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock. They help smuggle musket balls, sound the alarm that the Redcoats are coming, and deliver a secret message to Paul Revere. Along the way they learn that most of the revolutionaries leaned on God’s direction and even pastors helped in the cause.

Christian parents and teachers will appreciate the historical facts as well as the biblical worldview training their kids and students will absorb. The kids will appreciate the excitement and tension of an America at war with England, and in some ways, with itself.

My Review

We really enjoyed this book for its historical content ! This is the first in a sub-series revolving around the Revolutionary War. We read this book as part of a homeschooling unit study on the American Revolution. We had fun reading as a family each night till we were done and I really feel we learned a lot in a fun way ! The children’s  attention was held while one of us read and to me this is important. This book only took a few nights to read , so it was great for before bed or during breakfast. If your children like history and you are looking for something that is fun and full of adventure, give this book a try !

Miracles from Heaven ~ Movie Review

images

Anna Beam (Kylie Rogers) lives with a rare, incurable disorder that leaves her unable to digest food. Despite the dire diagnosis, devoted mom Christy (Jennifer Garner) relentlessly searches for a way to save her beloved daughter. Everything changes in an instant when Anna tells an amazing story of a visit to heaven after surviving a headlong tumble into a tree. Her family and doctors become even more baffled when the young girl begins to show signs of recovering from her fatal condition.

Wow, what a touching story !  As most of us we hate to see a child suffering with illness and this story just grabs your heart and takes you into the reality of it. Be sure to have a box of tissues handy ! Being the mom of a type 1 diabetic son,  I can sure related to what it feels like to be in the hospital waiting for Dr’s to tell you what is wrong with your child. It is heart wrenching to say the least.  I knew right where she was at when her daughter wanted to just have things be over with.  Each time that my son struggled with being diabetic and hated doing shots just tore my heart and made me ache for what the rest of his life would be like.  I am proud to say that my son is now 26 , A wonderful father and a great daddy !   It is not that often that we hear of someone being healed, but when it does happen it is a great and mighty testimony of God working in the lives of those that love Him.

Do you think your loved ones not being healed is due to your sin  ?  Has someone told you that someone in your lives has sinned and that this is the reason for no healing ?  I have to say that this movie will show you just the opposite and that God is a Loving and Awesome God !

This movie just may change your life !

What a blessing this Devotional Journal is ! To be honest I wish there had been such things when I was having my own children.  I truly love the pictures in here that you will enjoy for years to come and I know this would really be a wonderful gift to many. A book sure to touch the heart of any mom !

A Devotional Journal for Moms by Jennifer Flanders Isn’t this book so sweet,
there is so much wisdom in here for a new Mamma and for the next generation
to read later in the future !

I just love the way Jennifer has thought of each little area to be filled in by a loving
mother, while she is caring for her children and adding each things caring so that
her child can have these memories to cherish. From before this child was even conceived
until later in life.

This journal is filled with Bible verses on mothers babies and love, that will bring God’s
Word to life to the family. Information to pray for that child before birth and as a child and
as a teen ! Each thing that is included in this Devotional Journal has been added with much
thought given to details.

This would make a very special gift for the New Mom to Be or for a Mom who has children to fill
in for each child. You may want to get one for each baby you have had. Great Baby Shower
present for the expectant christian couple to write down their thoughts as they travel this journey
of pregnancy and birth and training up of their child.

I am sure you will totally enjoy this book and see that it is indeed a true blessing.

I was given this book via the publisher/Author and I recieved this book by applying

Parenting With Grace

a193d1bfe1e541544d15598f263a0207

You spend each day wondering if your children will ever see the need in their own lives for the Savior.  Perhaps their words or actions in life you find very saddening.  You surely know that you never treated your parents with disrespect or acted out the way your kids are right ? Maybe its any of the following things that are bothering you as your young people are saying or doing ?

~ Mom, that was you, we don’t want to be like you !

~ But were not tired !

~ Why can’t we wear make up ? ( they are only 10 or 12 years old )

~ I don’t want to change my clothing, I like the way I am dressed !

~ I hate you !

~ I hate my siblings !

~ Your So Old Fashioned !

~ It doesn’t matter how much make up you wear or don’t wear, your still ugly !

 ~ I don’t want to do school !

~ What is wrong with liking boys ?

~ I don’t want to clean my room ! Its clean enough for me !

~ They slammed the door so hard it put the doorknob through the wall again !

~ They said WHAT ?  swore, profaned God’s name…

Yes I hear some of you saying , that child deserves a spanking !  Soap in the mouth ! No Supper !  Loss of something precious to their young minds… ie. TV, tablet, Wii, or going somewhere special…

Isn’t that what your thinking ?

and your saying God’s Word says to spank them… It says He who spares the rod spoils the child… I know all the verses and so do you , I was raised in a Baptist Church, spanked as  a child and I live to tell !!!!  But I also know that at some point spanking when it causes more rebellion, hate and hard feelings, does no good.  Its been so long since I spanked my kids, I can’t  even tell you when the last time was.  I came to a real understanding that, if they couldn’t reason with me and hear my heartache for their lives, it wasn’t going to do a bit of good to spank them.

Do I take away some priviledges ? You bet I do…

The Wii or the Tablet time or TV …. Yup I do.

Do I do  TIME OUT !!! Yes I do… Do we talk a lot about what they are doing wrong and what God expects from them as children ?  Yes we do !!!!

I am so glad that the Father doesn’t always whip my butt for every single thing I do wrong. God has shown me so much Grace and Mercy in my lifetime and I am thankful for that.

As A wise man said to me once ” You cannot beat your kids Souls out of Hell ! “

Yup, I hear you again, but the Bible says it will !

Do you ever think that if we spend more time Nurturing and Admonishing that we might see a change in our children ?

God’s Word says to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

You know what I remember…  I remember knowing that if I was bad or sinned my mom would spank me for it. But I also know that I didn’t tread that path very often. And  I know that there are things my kids do that my own mom probably thinks they deserve a spanking for today… But I am not my mom and I am Myself.  I want my kids to look back and say, You know what Mom, I probably deserved a spanking for that, but I am so glad that you didn’t do that and that you talked to me and got me to see that I was headed the wrong way… and when I went the wrong way Mom, you prayed for me.

That is true today of my older kids.  I still see them clearly running away from life and from God and there is nothing I can do but Pray, Cry, Pray some more… Talk with them and Pray more… It will do no good, to belittle them, make them feel bad or point out their sin…my older kids know when they are sinning and I have sometimes pointed it out to them when they bold faced say…. Things have changed MOM !  That is culture and its changed now !!!

Really ?  My God has not changed !  His Word has not  changed !

Hard !

What is Grace ?

It is receiving something that you really do not deserve, nor have you hearned it.

What is Mercy ?

Isn’t it the putting off of  punishment and showing Grace when someone doesn’t deserve it.

Have you shown your children God’s Grace and Mercy lived out in their lives through your character ?

or have you lost your cool and said something mean in anger ?

Have you shown your kids God’s Love by loving them…

For God so loved…. He gave….  Gave us something we didn’t deserve and that is Life through His Son Jesus, dying for you and me and for our children…

If you lost it… have you told your kids your sorry and hugged them ?

If you kids have emotional issues and act out… loud , yelling, angry MOM isn’t going to make them do whats right.

It might make them ruin your walls , writing hateful things on them.  It might make them put door knobs through walls.

It  may make them want to leave your house to young and make them walk into sin they have no clue is out there.

They may turn to the wrong people, sometimes even family can be the wrong people… Sometime another young person is the wrong person for your daughter or son to turn to.

Have  you asked the Father to show you where you are messing up with your kids and what you can do to make things right with them ?

and if your a godly parent and your kids are still walking down the wrong road or path and you know your doing everything you can do be walking in His ways and living in holiness…

Don’t beat yourself up, PRAY, Seek Gods Face and Keep Praying.

If your kids are in sin, don’t hide it, talk to someone you trust and find a way to Pray through it and get advice that is sound and godly.

And above all else, trust God’s Word and His Promises where it deals with children.

I know where your at …. None of us are perfect parents…

We all need GRACE and MERCY !

Love your children !

and

Pray !

31 Days of femininity: Being feminine towards your children On The Modest Mom Blog.

Do you consider yourself feminine towards your children? This isn’t something I stop and think about very often. I strive to be feminine towards my husband and towards other people, but my children?

I considered the reasons why I would want to show femininity towards my children, and here are a few I came up with.
1. To model being a woman. Of course that seems obvious, but I mean a true lady. I want to give my boys a clear vision of what a woman content to be a female looks like, and model that as an example for my daughters.

My Review:

~   After years of using different things to teach my children about God, finally there is something to grab their attention! Not for just an hour a week, but for 36 weeks of study about God. We are using this in our homeschool and so love it! The children love the way Theo and Christy are there throughout the study and the colors in the book keep their attention.  This study requires the children to use their bible and think through things about God, Themselves, Sin, God’s Plan and it covers all the topics you really want your children to know to grow in God and Faith. It shows them how to have a faith that is not dead, one that shows forth God’s love and how to let their light shine! I cannot think of a better way to spend 20.00 on your child.  It is a workbook to use and not just a book to read.  We are using it as a weekly study into God’s Word and His Character, as well as who we really are and how sin affects our lives.  I think the best thing we can do for our children is teach them who God is and what is plan is for our lives. This is a book that will bring blessings on Your Home, Your Child, and will let them know that God really cares!
